No-Drill Cable Trays: Check These 4 Things Before You Buy
No-drill describes an installation method, not a promise that a tray fits every desk. Before comparing colours or prices, check the surface, the mounting position and the equipment you want to hold. This guide helps you prepare a shortlist; it does not certify any desk-and-tray combination.

1. Clamp range
Measure the thickness at the actual mounting location, not just at the front edge. A lip, rail or supporting frame can change the space available to the clamp. Compare your measurement with the manufacturer's permitted range and surface restrictions. Glass, hollow-core or delicate finishes may need different hardware; do not assume a clamp is suitable without checking.
2. Edge shape
Look underneath and along the edge. A rounded or bevelled edge may leave less flat contact area than the top view suggests. Check how the clamp is intended to contact the surface and whether its protective pads are included. No-drill does not mean mark-free. Do not compensate for a poor fit by forcing or overtightening a clamp.
3. Shared space
Mark the positions already used by monitor arms, drawers, braces and other accessories. Check the space needed to install and adjust the tray, not only its final footprint. On a moving desk, the cable layout must also follow the desk maker's instructions throughout its travel. A different mounting location may be more useful than a larger tray.
4. Plug clearance
Measure the power strip and any bulky adapters, then consider where their cables leave the tray. The outside dimensions of a basket are not its usable inside dimensions. End bars, brackets and screws can take up space. If the required clearances are not published, ask the seller rather than treating a lifestyle photo as a measurement.
Before you order
Keep the tray's installation instructions, load limit and permitted surfaces alongside your measurements. Check access to switches and plugs and follow the equipment manufacturers' safety guidance. If a critical dimension is unknown, leave that candidate unapproved instead of guessing.
