Pot Lid Organisers: Check These 4 Things Before You Buy
Standing lids on their edge can free a lot of cupboard space, but a lid stored upright needs at least its own diameter in height. Knobs, handles and the spacing of the dividers matter too. Use these checks before choosing a rack for a cupboard, shelf or deep drawer. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Largest lid
Measure the diameter of your largest lid, including any rim or handle that sticks out. Standing upright, it needs at least that much height, plus however far the rack lifts it off the shelf. Compare this with the height inside the cupboard, or inside a drawer with the drawer above closed. A lid that is too tall has to lean, which takes more room.
2. Knobs and spacing
When a lid stands on its edge, its knob or handle sticks out to one side, so it needs space between the dividers. Compare the height of the knob with the gap between dividers, and check whether the dividers can be moved. Count the lids and pans you want to store and compare that with the number of dividers or slots.
3. Rack length
Measure the width and depth of the space where the rack will go, and the door opening or hinges it must pass. An expanding rack has a shortest and a longest length and will not shrink below the shortest. Leave room at the front to lift lids out without hitting the cupboard frame or the shelf above.
4. Steady lids
Glass or cast-iron lids can be heavy and may tip if the dividers are short or far apart. Compare the divider height with the size of your lids, and check that the rack has non-slip feet or a base that will not slide on your shelf. If a rack is fixed to a door or wall, follow the maker's fixing instructions.
Before you order
Keep your largest lid diameter, knob height and the inside height, width and depth of the space next to the rack's length range, width, divider height and number of dividers. After setting it up, check that each lid stands without touching the shelf above and that the rack stays put when you pull a lid out. If a measurement you need is not published, ask the seller.
