Slim Shoe Cabinets: Measure These 4 Things Before You Buy
Slim shoe cabinets can be less than 25 cm deep, which makes them useful in narrow hallways, but the shallow depth is also their limit. Large trainers and boots may not fit, the flaps need room to open, and a tall, shallow cabinet has to be fixed to the wall. Use these checks before choosing a cabinet. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Shoe size
Measure the length and height of the largest shoes you want to store, including boots and chunky trainers. Compare them with the maximum shoe size or compartment size in the listing, not with the photos. Tilt-out flaps hold shoes at an angle, so the cabinet's depth is not the shoe length it takes. If no maximum size is given, ask the seller.
2. Depth and flaps
Measure the width of the hallway, then allow for the cabinet's depth plus the flaps or doors when open. Check that the front door, other doors and radiators can still open, and that an open flap does not block the way through. In a narrow hall, a cabinet that looks slim when closed can take much more room while you use it.
3. Wall and skirting
Read how the maker wants the cabinet secured and whether an anti-tip fitting and wall fixings are included. Check what your wall is made of and choose suitable fixings. A skirting board, pipe or socket can stop the cabinet sitting flat against the wall, which also changes how far it sticks out.
4. Real capacity
The number of pairs in a listing depends on the shoes, so a cabinet sold for 12 pairs may hold fewer adult trainers. Count the compartments, check whether shelves or dividers adjust and find the load limit for each flap and for the top. Keep heavy items off the top unless the maker says it can take them.
Before you order
Keep your largest shoe size, hallway width and wall details next to the cabinet's depth, maximum shoe size, room needed for open flaps, load limits and fixing method. After assembly, fix it to the wall as directed and check that each flap opens fully without hitting anything. If the maximum shoe size is not published, ask the seller.
