Storage Cube Boxes: Measure These 4 Things Before You Buy
Storage cube boxes, also called fabric bins or cube baskets, turn an open cube shelf into hidden storage for clothes, toys and paperwork. They only look tidy if they fit the openings and slide in and out easily. Use these checks before choosing some. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Opening size
Measure the inside width and height of one opening, between the boards, not the outside of the whole unit. Cube shelves come in different sizes, so measure yours rather than going by the name. A box that is wider or taller than the opening will not go in, and a much smaller one leaves gaps. Some boxes come in more than one size, so check which size the listed price is for.
2. Depth
Measure the depth of the opening from the front edge to the back panel or the wall behind. A box that is deeper than the opening sticks out at the front, and a shallower one sits back from the edge. IKEA lists its DRÖNA box, which it says is dimensioned for KALLAX, at 33 cm wide, 38 cm deep and 33 cm high, so a 33 cm cube box is shallower than that. If the unit has no back panel, check that a box cannot be pushed out of the back.
3. Lid and handles
A lid sits on top of the box, so check whether the listed height includes it, and leave room above the box to lift the lid or reach in. Handles, rope loops and label holders on the front can add a little depth, and handles on the sides can catch on the boards. Check the photos and the size drawing, and ask the seller if the figures do not say.
4. Load and shape
Fabric boxes may be stiffened with card panels or a wire frame, and they can bulge or sag when packed with heavy things like books. Check any load figure in the listing and the shelf unit's own limit per shelf. Keep heavy items in the lower openings, and check that a full box keeps its shape when you slide it out.
Before you order
Keep the inside width, height and depth of one opening, and the space above for a lid, next to the box's listed size, lid, handles and load. If your unit has openings of different sizes, measure each one. After unpacking, slide a box in and out a few times, empty and full. If a figure is missing, or two figures in the listing disagree, ask the seller.
