Tension Rods: Measure These 4 Things Before You Buy
A tension rod, also called a spring rod or telescopic curtain pole, extends between two facing surfaces and holds by pressure, so you can hang a net curtain, a shower curtain or a few hangers without drilling. It only stays up if it suits the gap and the surfaces at each end. Use these checks before choosing one. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Gap width
Measure the gap between the two surfaces at the exact height the rod will sit, and at more than one point, as recesses and alcoves are not always straight. The gap must sit inside the rod's shortest and longest length. IKEA's BOTAREN shower curtain rod, for example, is listed at 120 to 200 cm. Some rods come in several length ranges, so check which one the listed price is for.
2. End surfaces
The ends need firm, flat surfaces facing each other, such as tiles, plaster or a solid frame. Check for skirting, tiles that stop short, sockets and switches, and soft plasterboard or wallpaper that the ends could dent or mark. One reviewer on IKEA's BOTAREN page wrote that its rubber ends left marks on the wall, so test on a hidden spot first where that matters.
3. Load
A tension rod is held only by pressure, so compare what you will hang with the listed load. A wet shower curtain, lined curtains or clothes on hangers can weigh much more than a light net curtain, and some small rods are listed at only 1.5 kg. If no load is listed, ask the seller, and keep heavy things off the rod.
4. Rod diameter
Measure the inside of the curtain rings, the channel sewn into a net curtain, or the hooks you plan to use, and compare it with the rod's diameter. Telescopic rods are thicker where the outer tube is, so check that rings can slide over the join. A thin rod can bend under a load, so check the diameter and the load together.
Before you order
Keep the gap at the height the rod will sit, the surfaces at both ends, the weight you will hang and the size of your rings or curtain channel next to the rod's length range, end caps, load and diameter. After fitting, hang the load, wait a day and check that the rod has not slipped. If a figure is missing, ask the seller.
