Clothes Rails: Measure These 4 Things Before You Buy
A clothes rail, also called a clothes rack or garment rail, is a freestanding frame with a hanging rail, often on castors and sometimes with a shelf for shoes or boxes. It is handy in a small bedroom, a hallway or a room without a wardrobe, but only if it fits the floor space and the height, and holds the weight of your clothes. Use these checks before choosing one. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Footprint
Measure the floor width and depth where the rail will stand, and leave room in front to reach in and lift hangers off. Measure to the ends of the rail, not just the base: IKEA's RIGGA clothes rack is listed at 111 cm wide and 51 cm deep, and its listing says "Both ends of the clothes rail double as hooks", so anything hung there needs room too. Some rails extend sideways, so check the shortest and longest width. Look out for skirting boards, radiators and doors that open across the space.
2. Height
Measure your longest coat or dress on its hanger, from the top of the hanger hook, and compare it with the rail height: it should hang clear of the shelf or floor below. Then check the room above for a sloped ceiling, a shelf or a window. RIGGA is listed from 126 to 175 cm high and "can be locked in place at 6 fixed levels". Check whether a listing gives the height to the rail or to the top of the frame.
3. Load
Clothes on hangers weigh more than they look, especially coats and jeans. Compare the weight you will hang with the listed load: RIGGA is listed at a maximum of 35 kg. Some listings split the load: one listing we checked gives 50 kg in total, up to 20 kg on each of its two rails and 5 kg per shelf. If the figures are missing or unclear, ask the seller, and spread the weight along the rail.
4. Castors and floor
Castors make a rail easy to move, but it can roll on a hard floor when you pull a hanger off, or tip if a wheel catches on a rug or threshold. Check whether the castors lock, and how many do. On carpet, check that the rail stands level and does not lean. IKEA's RIGGA listing says "Castors included." Some rails have feet instead.
Before you order
Keep the floor width and depth, the space above, your longest item on its hanger, the weight you will hang and your floor type next to the rail's width range, depth, rail height, load and castors. After assembly, load it gradually, lock the castors and check that it stands level and steady. If a figure is missing, ask the seller.
