Over-the-Toilet Storage: Measure These 4 Things Before You Buy
A freestanding shelf over the toilet uses wall space that is otherwise empty, but toilets, cisterns and pipes vary more than they appear. The legs have to pass the tank and bowl, the lowest shelf has to clear the lid and flush, and the frame must stand steady on a bathroom floor. Use these checks before choosing a rack. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Leg width
Measure the widest point of the cistern and the bowl, then compare it with the space between the rack's legs, not its overall width. If the listing gives only the outside width, allow for the thickness of the legs or ask the seller for the inside measurement. Check the room on either side too: a toilet roll holder, radiator, basin or wall can stop the frame from sitting straight.
2. Tank clearance
Measure from the floor to the highest point of the cistern, including a push button on the lid, and compare it with the listed height to the first shelf. Leave enough room to press the flush and to lift the cistern lid for repairs. If the toilet seat or lid leans back when open, check that it will not knock the lowest shelf.
3. Pipes and floor
Check the wall and floor behind the toilet for the water supply pipe, a shut-off valve, a waste pipe or a skirting board. A low cross bar at the back of the rack can clash with them, so check where the bars sit before you buy. Tiles, a sloping floor or a raised plinth can make the rack rock, and adjustable feet help only within their range.
4. Wall fixing
Tall, narrow shelves can tip when loaded or leant on, so read how the maker wants it secured. Some include anti-tip straps or brackets that screw into the wall; others use adhesive pads, which depend on a clean, dry, smooth surface. Check what your wall is made of and whether fixings are included. Keep heavier items low and stay within the stated load.
Before you order
Keep your tank width, tank height and pipe positions next to the rack's inside width between the legs, height to the first shelf and fixing method. After assembly, check that the flush works, the cistern lid lifts off and the rack does not rock. If the inside width or first-shelf height is not published, ask the seller rather than guessing.
