Pegboards: Check These 4 Things Before You Buy
A pegboard is a panel with rows of holes or slots that you fix to a wall, or stand on a desk, and fit with hooks, shelves, cups and baskets. It only works well if it fits the wall space, is fixed in a way that suits your wall, and the accessories you want are made for its holes. Use these checks before choosing one. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Wall space
Measure the clear width and height of the wall you want to use, and mark sockets, switches, shelves and the desk or worktop below. IKEA's SKÅDIS pegboard is 76 cm wide and 56 cm high. Decide which way up it will go: a reviewer on IKEA's Ireland page hung it on its side and wished "the brackets that hang the panel could go eachway", and one on the UK page wanted an "upright version of the biggest board".
2. Wall and fixings
Find out what the wall is made of. IKEA says of SKÅDIS: "Rail for wall mounting included." and "Screws for wall mounting sold separately." Some plastic boards can also be stuck on: one listing we checked suggests adhesive for "Smooth marble/tile", glass, metal and hardwood, and drilled mounting for "Plasterboard", wallpaper and painted walls. Buy screws and plugs that suit your wall.
3. Hooks and holes
Hole shapes and spacing vary, so hooks, shelves and cups from one system may not fit another. One listing we checked says its accessories are "only suitable for the pegboard in this link"; another says "Not applicable to IKEA" and shows slots 1.3 cm apart in rows 2 cm apart. List the accessories you need and check they are sold for that board.
4. Load and support
IKEA lists no maximum load for SKÅDIS and warns that it "must be securely anchored". A reviewer on IKEA's UK page found that it "only has one support bar" in the box. Neither AliExpress board we checked lists a load. Keep heavy items near the fixings, spread the weight, and ask the seller for a load per hook.
Before you order
Keep the clear wall size, the wall type, the list of hooks and shelves you need and your heaviest item next to the board's size, fixings included, hole pattern, accessories sold for it and load. After fixing, hang the heaviest item and check that the board stays flat and tight to its rail. If a figure is missing, ask the seller.
