Under-Sink Storage: Measure These 4 Things Before You Buy
The space under a sink is rarely an empty box. Pipes, the waste trap, shut-off valves, hinges and the cabinet frame all take up room, and some of that space must stay reachable. Use these checks to choose between a freestanding shelf, a pull-out organiser or simple bins. This guide helps you prepare a shortlist; it does not certify any cabinet-and-organiser combination.

1. Door opening
Measure the clear opening with the doors fully open, not just the inside of the cabinet. Face frames, hinges and soft-close fittings can reduce the width available for getting an organiser in and out. Compare that opening with the product's maximum outside dimensions, including runners and handles. If the organiser has to be assembled inside the cabinet, check that you will have room to do it.
2. Pipe zone
Sketch where the waste trap, supply pipes, shut-off valves and any waste disposal unit or water filter sit, and measure their distance from the side walls and the back. Shut-off valves and connections need to stay reachable, so do not plan storage that blocks them. An adjustable shelf may clear a pipe in one position and not another; check the adjustment range the seller lists.
3. Height below trap
Measure from the cabinet floor to the lowest part of the pipework where the organiser will stand. Allow for the tallest items you plan to store, such as spray bottles, not just the shelf itself. If the cabinet floor has a lip or is uneven, measure at the front and the back. Keep heavy items within the load limit the listing gives for each shelf.
4. Pull-out clearance
A pull-out organiser needs room for its runners at full extension and a clear path past the doors and hinges. Side-mounted runners may need a flat surface or a spacer to clear the cabinet frame. Check which parts must be screwed in and whether that suits your cabinet. If the mounting requirements are not published, ask the seller rather than guessing from a photo.
Before you order
Keep your sketch, the door opening and the pipe positions next to the product's dimensions, load limit and mounting method. Keep shut-off valves reachable and follow the plumbing and appliance makers' guidance. Cleaning products and water can leak, so a removable tray or liner may help. If a critical dimension is unknown, leave that candidate unapproved.
