Under-Shelf Baskets: Check Shelf Thickness and 3 More Things
Under-shelf baskets add a layer of storage without drilling, but they hang from the shelf itself. If the arms are too tight they will not slide on; too loose and the basket tilts. Use these checks to see whether a basket suits your cupboard, bookcase or desk before you buy. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Shelf thickness
Measure the thickness of the shelf where the arms will slide on, including any edge trim or lip. Compare it with the shelf thickness in the listing; some baskets suit only a narrow range. Some makers allow the arms or clips to be adjusted; follow their instructions rather than forcing a fit. Glass shelves, wire shelves and shelves with a raised front edge may need another design.
2. Shelf depth
Measure the depth of the shelf and compare it with the length of the arms and the depth of the basket. Arms that are much shorter than the shelf may not hold the basket level, and a basket deeper than the cupboard can stop the door closing. Check for shelf pins, brackets, hinges or a back rail that the arms could hit.
3. Space below
Measure from the underside of the shelf to the next shelf, the worktop or the items stored below. Subtract the basket's full height and the room you need to lift things in and out. An adjustable-length basket may change width but not height, so check the inside height as well as the outside size.
4. Load and open sides
Find the load limit in the listing and stay within it; a hanging basket also adds weight to the shelf, which has its own limit. Some baskets are open at the back or sides, so round or small items can roll or slide out. Heavy tins or glass jars may be better on the shelf itself. Check that the basket does not tilt when you pull something from the front.
Before you order
Keep your shelf thickness, shelf depth and space-below measurements next to the basket's shelf thickness range, arm length, full height and load limit. After fitting, check that the basket hangs level, the door closes and nothing slides out when you reach in. If the shelf thickness it fits is not published, ask the seller or choose another basket.
