Wall-Mounted Folding Tables: Check These 4 Things Before You Buy
A wall-mounted folding table is a table top fixed to the wall on hinged brackets or fold-out legs, so it folds flat when you are not using it. It only works if the wall has room for it at the right height, the wall can hold the fixings, there is room to sit when it is open, and it carries what you put on it. Use these checks before choosing one. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Wall space and height
Measure the clear wall width, and look for sockets, switches, radiators and skirting boards where the brackets or legs go. IKEA says of its NORBERG table: "For use at table height: Fix the table to the wall so that the top edge of the table top reaches a height of ca. 74 cm." For bar height it gives "ca. 95 or 106 cm, depending on seat height of bar chair." NORBERG is 74 cm wide and 60 cm deep.
2. Wall type and fixings
IKEA says of NORBERG: "Different wall materials require different types of fixing devices. Use fixing devices suitable for the walls in your home, sold separately." Its warning adds: "to reduce the risk of this product falling down, it must be securely anchored." The 75 x 40 cm table we checked says: "It is suitable for installation on cement walls, concrete, stone, or wooden walls." If your wall is plasterboard, ask the seller first.
3. Room to sit
Measure from the wall to where a chair and your knees will go when the table is open, and check that doors and walkways still clear it. The drop-leaf table we checked is 80 x 50 x 1.6 cm; the table on fold-out legs is 75 x 40 cm and 74 cm high. IKEA says NORBERG "Seats 2." A reviewer on IKEA's Irish page wrote that "it doesn't take up space when not using it."
4. Load
The 75 x 40 cm table lists "Load-bearing Capacity: 60kg/132.28lbs". The drop-leaf listing's title says "Sturdy Structure with High Load Capacity" but gives no figure, and IKEA's NORBERG page lists no maximum load. If you plan to put a monitor or a sewing machine on it, ask the seller for the load.
Before you order
Keep the clear wall width, the height you want, your wall type and the room to sit next to the table's width, depth, height, fixings and load. After fitting, check that it is level and firm before you put anything on it. If a figure is missing, ask the seller.
