Hanging Wardrobe Organisers: Measure These 4 Things Before You Buy
A hanging wardrobe organiser, also called hanging shelves or a hanging closet organiser, hooks over the wardrobe rail and adds fabric shelves for folded clothes, bags or shoes without drilling. It only works if it fits under the rail, inside the closed wardrobe and on the rail itself. Use these checks before choosing one. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Drop below rail
Measure from the top of the wardrobe rail down to the wardrobe floor, or to anything below it such as drawers, a shelf or shoes. Compare it with the organiser's full height including its hooks or straps. IKEA's SKUBB storage with 6 compartments, for example, is listed at 125 cm high, and one listing we checked gives 131 cm overall but about 119 cm without the hooks. Organisers often come with different numbers of shelves, so check the height of the option you choose.
2. Depth, door shut
Measure the inside depth of the wardrobe from the back to the closed door, and where the rail sits within that depth. The organiser hangs under the rail, so it needs room in front of and behind the rail, and sliding doors or racks on the door take up space. IKEA lists SKUBB at 45 cm deep and says it "Fits PAX wardrobe frames, 58 cm deep." The two organisers linked below are listed at 30 cm deep.
3. Rail and hooks
Measure the free length of rail you can give up, as the organiser also takes width from your hanging clothes. SKUBB is listed at 35 cm wide. Then check how it attaches: hooks need an opening that fits over your rail, and straps need to wrap round it. Measure the rail's thickness and shape, and look for brackets or a centre support where you want to hang it. IKEA says of SKUBB: "The hook and loop fastener makes it easy to hang up and move."
4. Load per shelf
Fabric shelves can sag when full. Look for a listed load per shelf and for stiffening boards in the shelves. One listing we checked states about 2.5 kg per compartment; the other lists no load. A reviewer on IKEA's SKUBB page wrote that "Each shelf has a light weight panel giving it some stiffness". The wardrobe rail carries the organiser and your clothes, so keep heavy things low and do not overload the rail.
Before you order
Keep the drop below the rail, the depth with the door shut, the free rail width and rail size, and the weight you plan to store next to the organiser's height with hooks, depth, width, fixing and listed load. After hanging, fill it gradually and check that the rail and shelves do not bend. If a figure is missing, ask the seller.
