Expandable Cutlery Trays: Measure These 4 Things Before You Buy
An expandable cutlery tray, or drawer organiser, gives knives, forks and utensils their own slots and stretches to fill more of the drawer. It only helps if it fits inside the drawer and the drawer still closes. Use these checks before choosing one. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Inside width
Measure the inside of the drawer from side to side, not the drawer front, which is usually wider. Compare it with the tray's smallest and largest width: the drawer must be at least as wide as the tray's smallest size. Measure at the bottom as well as the top, because some drawer sides are not straight, and leave a little room to lift the tray out.
2. Inside depth
Measure from the inside of the drawer front to the back, at the bottom where the tray will sit. Compare it with the tray's length. Some trays extend in width only, so their length has to suit your drawer as it is; others extend both ways. If the drawer does not pull all the way out, check that you can still reach the back of the tray.
3. Height clearance
Measure the inside height of the drawer and the gap under the worktop, rail or drawer above. Add the tray's height to the height of your bulkiest utensils, such as a whisk or a ladle, and check that the drawer will still close. A tray that stands higher than the drawer sides can catch as the drawer slides in.
4. Slot length
Measure your longest utensils, such as a bread knife, ladle or spatula, and compare them with the longest compartment. Count the slots you need. Rubber feet or a non-slip base help stop the tray sliding as the drawer opens. Empty an expandable tray before lifting it out, so the parts do not come apart.
Before you order
Keep the inside width, depth and height of your drawer and the length of your longest utensils next to the tray's smallest and largest size, height and compartment lengths. After fitting, open and close the drawer a few times with the tray loaded and check that nothing slides or catches. If a measurement is not published, ask the seller.
