Towel Rails: Check These 4 Things Before You Buy
A towel rail is a bar or ring that holds towels on a wall or over a door. It only works well if it fits the space, it is fixed in a way that suits the wall or door, it is wide enough for your towels, and it holds them when they are wet. Use these checks before choosing one. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Wall or door space
Measure the clear wall or door width, and check that doors, shower screens and drawers can still open past it. IKEA's BROGRUND towel rail is 67 cm long and 13 cm deep. A reviewer on IKEA's UK page wrote: "This double towel rail was the perfect size to fit our bathroom door." Another wrote: "Wish they did the one bar version for narrower spaces".
2. Fixing
IKEA says of BROGRUND: "Different wall materials require different types of fixing devices. Use fixing devices suitable for the walls in your home, sold separately." The ring we checked sticks on with ready-applied double-sided tape; its images list smooth tile, glass, metal, marble and smooth wood as suitable, rule out painted, cement, brick and rough walls and wallpaper, and say to wait more than 24 hours before hanging anything.
3. Towel width
Fold the towels the way you will hang them and measure the width. A reviewer on IKEA's UK page said BROGRUND "can hold 2 large bath towels with no issues". The over-door bar we checked is 23.5 or 36 cm long and 6.2 cm high; the ring we checked is 20 x 13 x 4 cm. Compare those with a folded bath towel, not just a hand towel.
4. Door gap and load
An over-door bar hooks over the top of a cupboard door, so the door must fit inside the hooks and still close with a towel on. The over-door listing we checked gives no hook gap, so measure the door thickness and ask the seller. IKEA lists no load for BROGRUND and neither AliExpress listing gives one; wet towels are heavy.
Before you order
Keep the clear wall or door width, the wall surface or door thickness and the width of your folded towels next to the rail's length, depth, fixings, hook gap and load. After fitting, hang a wet towel and check that the rail stays level and firm. If a figure is missing, ask the seller.
