Wall-Mounted Drying Racks: Check These 4 Things Before You Buy
A wall-mounted drying rack folds flat when you do not need it and pulls out when you do, which helps in a small bathroom, hallway or utility room. It has to fit the wall, open without blocking anything and hold wet laundry safely. Use these checks before choosing one. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Wall width
Measure the clear stretch of wall where the rack will go, and mark window and door frames, light switches, sockets and shelves. Compare it with the rack's width, and leave room at the ends to open it and reach the clothes. Some racks come in more than one width, so check which size the listed price is for.
2. Open depth
Compare how far the rack sticks out from the wall when it is open with the space in front of the wall. Check that it will not block a door, a walkway, a shower screen or a window that opens inwards. A folded rack still sticks out from the wall, so check the folded depth as well.
3. Wall and fixings
Check whether the wall is solid brick, block or concrete, a plasterboard stud wall, or tiled. Wet laundry pulls on the top fixings, so they must suit the wall. Some listings say a rack is for solid walls only and not for tiles or hollow walls. Check for hidden pipes and cables before drilling, and if you are not sure, ask a fitter.
4. Load and drop
Check whether the maximum load is for the whole rack or for each rod, and spread wet washing evenly. Measure from where the rack will sit down to the floor, radiator or worktop below, and compare it with your longest items, such as towels or trousers folded over a rod. Mount it where you can reach every rod.
Before you order
Keep the clear wall width, the space in front of the wall, the wall type and the drop below next to the rack's width, open and folded depth, fixings and load. After fitting, load it evenly and check that it opens and folds without hitting anything and that the fixings stay tight. If a figure is missing, or two figures in the listing disagree, ask the seller.
