Wall Coat Racks: Check These 4 Things Before You Buy
A wall coat rack is a rail or board with hooks that screws to the wall, or in some cases sticks on, to hold coats, bags and hats. It only works well if the hung coats leave room to walk past, it is fixed in a way that suits the wall, it has enough well-spaced hooks, and it can take the weight. Use these checks before choosing one. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Walkway space
Measure the clear wall width and the hallway width, and check the door swing, radiators and light switches. Hung coats project much further than the rack itself: IKEA's TJUSIG hanger is 19 cm wide, 7 cm deep and 78 cm high, and one rail we checked is 40 x 7 x 7 cm. A reviewer on IKEA's UK page found TJUSIG "more space saving than a freestanding coat stand if you don't have much room".
2. Wall and screws
Find out what the wall is made of and check for cables and pipes. IKEA says of TJUSIG: "Screws for wall mounting sold separately." A reviewer on IKEA's Ireland page wrote that it "requires special wall mounting screws that were NOT provided", and one on the UK page noted: "The head has to fit in the hole to hang." Both rails we checked show a screw and a no-drill option; adhesive needs a smooth, clean wall.
3. Hooks and spacing
Count what will hang there every day, and allow more room for bulky winter coats than the gap between hooks suggests. Some rails have sliding hooks: one listing we checked says its hooks "Can be left and right sliding". IKEA suggests "putting two clothes racks on top of one another" to use more of the wall's height.
4. Load
A reviewer on IKEA's UK page wrote that TJUSIG "does not hold much weight" and that the wall inserts "fall out under the smallest load". IKEA lists no load for TJUSIG; one rail listing we checked shows a bearing capacity of 20 kg and the other gives none. Any load depends on the wall and fixings, so ask the seller.
Before you order
Keep the clear wall width, the walkway width, the wall type and the number and weight of coats and bags next to the rack's length, depth, hook count and spacing, fixings included and load. After fitting, hang your heaviest coat and bag and check that the rack stays tight to the wall. If a figure is missing, ask the seller.
