Hanging Shower Caddies: Check These 4 Things Before You Buy
A hanging shower caddy, also called a shower basket or shower hanger, hooks over the shower pipe, a riser rail, a glass screen or a door to hold shampoo, soap and sponges without drilling. It only works if the hook suits what it hangs on, the baskets suit your bottles, and it hangs straight when loaded. Use these checks before choosing one. 1. Hook fit
Decide what the caddy will hang on: the shower pipe, a riser rail, the top of a glass screen or a door. Measure how thick it is and compare it with the hook opening; one listing we checked shows a 5 cm opening. IKEA says of its KROKFJORDEN shower hanger: "Simply hang it on the shower mixer or rail". A reviewer on IKEA's UK page wished the "half closed ring" hook was "a little bigger" so the caddy would "hang flush to the wall".
2. Drop and width
Measure from the hanging point down to the taps, controls, soap shelf or shower tray, and the width of clear wall. Compare them with the caddy's height and width including the hook. KROKFJORDEN is listed at 24 cm wide, 11 cm deep and 53 cm high. Check that the caddy will not block the controls, a window or the shower head's slide.
3. Bottle height
Measure your tallest bottles and pump dispensers, then the clear height between the baskets and the basket depth. A reviewer on IKEA's UK page removed the top basket of KROKFJORDEN "as most shampoo gel and conditioner bottles are too tall to fit properly". Leave room above a pump bottle to press it.
4. Balance and grip
A hanging caddy can tilt when the weight is uneven or when you press a pump. Reviewers on IKEA's pages wrote that it "leans side to side and things fall" and is "always tilted on one side". Look for rubber-coated hooks, suction cups or a stopper, spread the weight, and protect glass: another reviewer wrote that "metal on glass is an issue". A load limit is rarely listed, so ask the seller.
Before you order
Keep what the caddy will hang on and how thick it is, the clear drop and width below, your tallest bottles and the surfaces it will touch next to the caddy's hook opening, height, basket size, grip and load. After hanging, load it evenly, press a pump bottle and check that it stays level. If a figure is missing, ask the seller.
