Expandable Drawer Dividers: Measure These 4 Things Before You Buy
Expandable drawer dividers, also called drawer separators, stretch across a drawer and hold themselves in place by pressing on its walls, so socks, T-shirts or utensils stay in their own sections. They only stay put if they suit the span and the drawer walls. Use these checks before choosing some. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Inside span
Decide which way the dividers will run, then measure inside the drawer in that direction, wall to wall, at the height where the ends will press. The span must sit inside the divider's shortest and longest length. IKEA's VARIERA drawer divider, for example, is listed for a depth of 47.4 to 53.5 cm and goes from the front edge to the back edge. Measure at both sides of the drawer, in case it is not square.
2. Drawer height
Measure the inside height of the drawer and the gap under the worktop, rail or drawer above. Compare them with the divider's height: a divider that stands higher than the drawer sides can catch as the drawer closes. Heights vary between products, and IKEA lists VARIERA at 11.8 cm, so check shallow drawers carefully.
3. Drawer walls
Pressure dividers hold by pushing on the drawer walls, so the walls need to be firm, flat and straight where the ends sit. Look for rounded corners, lips, runners, and handle screws coming through the front, and for thin sides that may bow out. Some dividers have foam or rubber end pads and some use adhesive pads, so check whether adhesive could mark the finish.
4. Section width
Measure what will go in each section, such as a folded T-shirt, rolled socks or your longest utensil, and add a little room to lift things out. Work out how many dividers you need across the drawer, remembering that each divider takes up some width too. Packs come in different counts, so check how many the listed price is for.
Before you order
Keep the inside span in the direction the dividers will run, the inside height and the gap above, the state of the drawer walls and the width of each section next to the divider's length range, height, end pads and pack size. After fitting, open and close the loaded drawer a few times and check that the dividers stay in place. If a figure is missing, ask the seller.
