Cupboard Shelf Risers: Measure These 4 Things Before You Buy
A shelf riser, sometimes sold as a shelf insert, turns one tall cupboard shelf into two levels for plates, mugs, bowls or tins. It only helps if it fits through the door opening, leaves enough height above and below and suits the shelf it stands on. Use these checks before choosing one. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Door opening
Measure the inside width of the cupboard at its narrowest point, which may be at the door opening, a face frame or the hinges rather than at the back of the shelf. Compare it with the riser's width, or with its shortest and longest length if it expands. An expanding riser also needs room to be lifted in and adjusted.
2. Height underneath
Measure the tallest plates, bowls or tins you want to keep underneath, including stacks. Compare them with the clear height under the riser's top, not with its overall height, and leave room for your fingers. If the listing gives only the overall height, remember that the top panel and any frame take some of it.
3. Room on top
Measure from the shelf the riser stands on to the shelf or cupboard top above it. Subtract the riser's overall height and compare what is left with the height of the mugs, glasses or jars you want on top. Leave enough room to lift them out without tipping them. Some risers have a raised edge or lip that also takes space.
4. Depth and load
Compare the riser's depth with the depth of the shelf and check that the door will still close, including any rack on the door. Check how the legs sit on your shelf: narrow legs can slip into the gaps of a wire shelf. Find the load limit in the listing and remember that the shelf underneath has its own limit.
Before you order
Keep your narrowest cupboard width, shelf depth and the heights of what goes under and on top next to the riser's width or length range, depth, overall height, clear height underneath and load limit. After fitting, check that the door closes and that the riser does not rock or slide. If the load limit is not published, ask the seller.
