Floating Shelves: Check These 4 Things Before You Buy
A floating shelf is a wall shelf with no visible brackets: a metal bracket is screwed to the wall and the shelf slides over its rods. It only looks and works right if the wall and fixings can hold it, it suits the space and your items, and it stays level when loaded. Use these checks before choosing one. This guide is a planning aid, not a compatibility guarantee.

1. Wall and fixings
Find out whether the wall is brick, concrete or plasterboard, and check for cables and pipes before drilling. IKEA says of its LACK wall shelf: "Hidden suspension brackets are included." and "Screws for wall mounting sold separately." A reviewer on IKEA's UK page wrote that it is "very important you get some of the fixings into a stud or they will lean". Use fixings that suit your wall.
2. Length and depth
Measure the clear wall width, the space above and the depth of the largest things you want to put on the shelf. LACK is 110 cm long and 26 cm deep; the two AliExpress shelves we checked are 40.6 by 15 cm and 42 by 16 cm. Check that the shelf will not block a door, window, switch or cupboard, and that you can still use the worktop or desk below.
3. Load
Books, plates and plants are heavy. LACK is listed with "Max. load 10 kg"; one AliExpress listing we checked shows "up to 22lbs" (about 10 kg) and the other lists no load. A listed load assumes the shelf is fixed properly into a suitable wall. A reviewer on IKEA's UK page called LACK "ok for light items".
4. Level and tilt
Floating shelves can tip forward slightly once loaded. Reviewers on IKEA's UK page wrote that LACK shelves "lean forward slightly" and that the bracket "needed some packing out so that the shelf didn't slope"; another suspected "the wrong wall plugs or not using enough fixings". Use a spirit level and every fixing hole, and push the shelf fully onto the rods.
Before you order
Keep the wall type, the clear wall space, the depth of your largest items and their total weight next to the shelf's length, depth, bracket, fixings included and load. After fitting, load it and check with a spirit level that it has not tipped forward. If a figure is missing, ask the seller.
